Chapter 31
SARAH JERKED UPRIGHT. Somebody was shaking her.
âWeâre almost there.â
Her head snapped around. It all came back with a bang.
âWhat?â
âYou fell asleep. One minute you were awake, the next minute, youâre out of it. I let you sleep.â
She blinked a couple times, shook her head. Outside dark thunderclouds hung low and heavy overhead, made it feel later than it was. Sheâd been asleep all afternoon. The remnants of a dream clung to her, a dream she didnât want to think about. It wasnât like all the other strange dreams sheâd been having lately. It was much worse. Sheâd delivered Jay into the hands of the men who held him as Cole had insinuated. And then theyâd rewarded her for being such a loyal member of the gang, handed her the knife.
Go ahead, make the first cut. You know where.
âSorry.â
âItâs okay. You needed it. Itâs your body reacting to the stress.â
But it wasnât okay.
Her mouth was dry, a sour taste coating her tongue. She licked her lips. She remembered now, understood why her pulse was racing, her chest so tight. And it wasnât because of the dream. Because that wasnât real.
This was.
Getting more real by the second.
âYou dozed off as I asked you what you were doing asleep in the back of your car.â
The question sheâd been dreading. The one she knew heâd ask sooner or later. How do you tell someone you were sleeping off the effects of drinking with the man heâs trying to save from the mess he blames you for?
You donât.
You avoid it at all costs until you get caught in a lie. Then you curl up and die.
âIâd had too much to drink. I was trying to sleep it off.â She looked down at her dirty, rumpled clothes. âI bet youâre thinking I look like the sort of person who sleeps in their car all of the time.â
âNo. I was thinking you werenât very far from where I was supposed to meet Jay.â
The sudden, randomness of the comment stole the words out of her mouth. Her throat clamped shut, choked off her breath. Stopped the words from coming, even if her heart hadnât been in the way, right there in her mouth.
âYou okay?â
She nodded. A small squeak popped out.
âCole.â
Something in her voice made his head snap around. Her resolve weakened and ebbed away. She clung to it, forced the words out, staring at the hollow-eyed reflection in the window.
âIt was me.â
âSay thatââ
âI was the girl in the bar. With Jay.â
He made a choking noise in the back of his throat as if he had the mother of all fishbones stuck in it.
âI donât believe it.â
âWell itâs true. None of that stuff happened anyway. I did not go into the restrooms with him. What? You think he was screwing me up against the wall? And some guy asked me his name when I was on my way out, thatâs all. I didnât even know it then.â
âWhy didnât you say something?â
âWhat? After youâve not shut up about how
